大众集团开发了新一代手动变速箱。六速变速箱MQ281。新的手动变速箱MQ281，首先会配置在新帕萨特上。开始投入量产。每年产量为45万台。同属大众旗下汽车品牌，奥迪，西亚特 斯科达以及大众汽车均会采用这款变速箱。
MQ281的扭矩谱为200至340牛顿米，意味着，它完全或部分取代了目前大众汽车MQ250和MQ350变速箱。
它基于2.5轴的概念，拥有最大7.89的高速档位。一方面，这保证了良好的起步性能（即使对于大车轮的重型车辆），另一方面，这有助于“减速”，以低发动机转速高速行驶，省油。
MQ281变速箱会在西班牙巴塞罗那机场附近El Prat de Llobregat 工厂生产。所有的铝零件都在那里生产，还有齿轮和轴，工厂有铸造厂、加工设施、装配和试验台设施。2018年，生产了近70万台MQ200变速箱，56%的产品出口。
除了在西班牙工厂生产，MQ281还会在德国Kassel、捷克的Vrchlabi和Mlad_Boleslav、阿根廷的Córdoba和中国的上海安亭、大连、天津和长春生产。
