在2017年的时候，马自达便释放关于第二代Skyactiv引擎的消息，到了8月，确定新引擎将会以Skyactiv-X命名。虽然马自达一直持续释放部分相关消息，甚至在2018年举办海外媒体试驾活动，邀请体验Skyactiv-X引擎，但相关详细规格与数据仍旧迟迟没有公布。
而日前马自达终于将Skyactiv-X引擎的完整信息一次揭露，包含技术规格、动力，以及最重要的油耗表现。Skyactiv-X排气量为2.0升，并且会使用「HCCI均质燃烧点火技术」，让这具引擎成为首款量产压燃气油引擎。其压缩比高达16.3：1，虽然是自然进气设计，但最大马力仍旧高达180匹，扭力峰值22.85公斤米，油耗更达到5.4L/100km的水平。
在Skyactiv-X引擎技术发布之际，就已经知晓马自达大胆地使用「HCCI均质燃烧点火技术」，打造出压燃汽油引擎，靠着高压缩制造热量点燃油气以产生动力。再搭配SPCCI (Spark Controlled Compression Ignition)的「火星塞控制压燃点火式汽油引擎技术」，理论上压燃引擎无须火星塞，但马自达安装火星塞的理由在于能够更加精准控制引擎油气点燃时机。结合传统火星塞点火与压燃点火两种不同技术，兼具两者的优点，让Skyactiv-X除了有充沛动力外，也维持极佳油耗。
最终马自达打造出一款拥有汽油引擎高转速能耐，同时兼具柴油引擎相似的低转速高扭力输出，与优异热效率所带来的油耗表现。和传统引擎相比，油耗甚至可以提升20%以上。搭载Skyactiv-X的马自达3，最佳油耗为5.4L/100km，最差都还是有6.89L/100km。
光靠着提升燃烧效率，不足以让油耗有着如此明显的改善，因此马自达还在Skyactiv-X引擎上安装一套M Hybrid 24V微油电混合动力系统。车辆煞车时可回收动能，并在需要时提供引擎动力辅助，进一步满足动力与油耗两者的需要。根据马自达原厂所提供的资料，马自达3的5门与4门车型，包含前驱和四驱规格，都会有搭载Skyactiv-X引擎的版本，并搭配6速手排或自排。
