美国总统特朗普5月30号宣布，美国将于今年6月10日起对所有墨西哥输美商品加征5%关税，以迫使墨西哥解决经美墨边境入境美国的非法移民问题。美国消费者新闻与商业频道（CNBC）网站6月1号发表文章称，对墨西哥输美商品加征5%关税将导致汽车价格大涨，不少美国人将被迫放弃购车计划，从而对美国汽车行业造成严重的负面影响。
美国消费者新闻与商业频道网站的报道称，2018年墨西哥出口到美国的汽车总价值超过了930亿美元，数量约为2018年美国汽车总销量1730万辆的15%。
2018年，美国从墨西哥进口的汽车数量约为260万辆，几乎是2011年进口133万辆的两倍。
如果美国从6月10号开始对墨西哥加征5%的汽车进口关税，会使墨西哥制造的皮卡汽车价格每辆上涨约1500美元，对于很多美国民众来说，这样的价格会使他们放弃购车计划，从而使美国今年以来已经不太景气的汽车销售雪上加霜。
此外，如果美国与墨西哥在相关问题上无法达成协议，从10月起美国会将墨西哥输美商品的关税提升至25%，这无疑会对汽车行业造成更沉重的打击，不仅消费者无法承担过高的价格，车企的利润率也会大大降低。
美国汽车制造商联盟首席执行官戴维·施维泰特表示，加征的关税最终是对美国消费者加税，不仅不利于美国的经济发展，同时还会危及数百万依赖于进出口贸易的美国人的工作。
